A vision is born: connect people instantly for short, live audio exchanges to share knowledge and emotions. Dubbed the “Tinder of Knowledge,” this idea emerged unexpectedly from exploring how language and emotions drive learning, particularly during the challenges of educating children in the COVID era.
Parlapp is officially launched in Paris, France, by Gemma and Emmanuel, with the goal of creating a knowledge marketplace for instant, person-to-person networking. Initial designs and specifications lead to the hiring of a Figma designer and a Ukrainian development agency to bring the vision to life.
The app debuts on Google Play and Apple App Store, reaching its first 25 users—family and friends. Early feedback highlights the appeal of its interaction model, but reliability issues with Firebase’s real-time notification system become a major obstacle to scaling.
“Here we can add a quote”
Emmanuel, Founder of Parlapp
Parlapp transitions from agency reliance to an in-house team of talented, international professionals. Developers from India, Japan, Morocco, and Pakistan collaborate seamlessly using Jira for project management and Slack for communication, fostering a vibrant and united team culture.
The machine-learning algorithm for matching queries to users reaches maturity. Using transformers, Parlapp combines similarity search, diversity, and performance optimization. Redis buffers real-time vector calculations, PostgreSQL handles user data, and BigQuery stores historical data. Business insights are visualized through Looker dashboards.
Parlapp joins the AWS Startup Loft Accelerator Winter 2022 cohort, benefiting from three months of business and technical mentorship. AWS credits fund staging and production environments, enabling robust cloud infrastructure. Special thanks to Marta Sousa Monteiro, Mathieu Desvé, and Áine Mulloy for their invaluable support.
A front-end developer, onboarded a year earlier, resolves the critical multi-device notification issue using OneSignal. This technical milestone rejuvenates the team’s enthusiasm, but the delayed progress in a resource-constrained environment signals looming challenges.
Parlapp’s journey ends in November 2024, unable to overcome the weight of early missteps. Over-engineering and an insufficient MVP approach led to relentless bug fixing and technical debt, leaving little room to focus on users and go-to-market strategies. Reaching only 100 users instead of the millions we aspired to serve, the experience offered invaluable lessons: the need for simplicity, rapid iteration, and prioritizing user engagement. While Parlapp didn’t fulfill its ambitions, it remains a bold and meaningful endeavor.
